Palm house

I've been working this weekend on a commission involving macros of succulent plants. Most of them were shots from last summer, but it was also a great reason to revisit the Palm House in the Botanic Gardens.

This beautiful, slightly decaying Victorian building is one of my favourite haunts in Belfast. The white-painted iron structure is a hymn to optimism, skywardness and a collector's spirit. The fascinating botanical contents are both long-staying guests and seasonal visitors.

I always meet somebody interesting there - today it was a feisty 80-year-old who got out of her wheelchair to smell the narcissi and made sarcastic jokes to me about when they'd be demolishing the whole thing and building bungalows instead. Unbeatable.
